In India, specific excellence accreditation for emergency departments was initiated by NABH in 2016. Five of the first seven EDs in India are Aster institutes. I had the privilege of playing an instrumental role and leading the marathon process of ED accreditation. The first two accredited EDs were Aster Medcity Kochi and Aster MIMS Calicut. In Karnataka, Aster CMI became the first accredited ED, while DMWIMS became the first medical college ED accredited with NABH Excellence. Aster MIMS Kottakkal became the first accredited rural emergency department. In 2018, I received the Quality Champion award from the EM Quality Forum. These efforts significantly raised awareness about the importance of quality accreditation in emergency departments, and many more Indian EDs followed suit.
