‘Angels' observes road traffic victims day
The Kozhikode beach, on Sunday, witnessed an accident involving a speeding motorbike and a pick-up van. The rider of the motorbike had a head injury, while the pillion rider had one of his hands cut off. Someone dialled 102 for an ambulance that raced through Customs Road to reach the accident spot within a minute. The ambulance staff carried the injured to the ambulance that sped off to the Government Medical College.
The scene was staged as part of a mock drill organised by the Active Network Group for Emergency Life Savers (Angels) ambulance network as part of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims observance.
The accident was staged so convincingly by a team led by magician Pradeep Hudino that the Sunday crowd that gathered at the spot within seconds reacted as if it were a real accident. They scolded the ambulance staff for being slow in carrying the injured to the vehicle. They even showered abuses at police personnel who stood aloof controlling the traffic and press photographers who crowded around.
It was only when the Angels programme coordinator Mehroof Raj began speaking on the dos and don'ts during an accident that the crowd realised that it was a mock drill.
City Police Commissioner Sparjan Kumar inaugurated the awareness programme that followed. Angels Executive Director P.P. Venugopal spoke on the need for safe driving and the permanent damage caused by unwise handling of accident victims. He said the Angels project was a success and had inspired similar projects in Malappuram and Wayanad districts. Angels would spread its wings to Palakkad and Kannur in the new year.
Dr. Mehroof Raj said the first batch of emergency life savers had completed their training and the second batch would begin soon.
Basic life support courses in trauma care and first aid are being organised for the public. To enrol, call 9747 102102.
